Medical intern sees breakthrough in the lab

Taneva Bush ’19 is steadily progressing on her goals to become a doctor. She took an intensive 10-week internship in Summer 2018, as part of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship program at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. It was the second time around for Bush, who’d done an initial fellowship last year in the Department of Anesthesia at the hospital’s Research Clinic. She was of such benefit, the hospital invited her to return.

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Johnson C. Smith University $149,466 to fund the development of a minor in data science. The award begins Aug. 1, 2018 and is under the direction of Dr. Felesia Stukes, assistant professor of computer science.

Tami Simmons named a 2018 Susan G. Komen ‘More than Pink Woman’

Susan G. Komen Charlotte named Tami Simmons, vice president of Institutional Advancement for Johnson C. Smith University, among the inaugural class of “More than Pink Women,” an exclusive group of eight women who are leaders in the fields of medicine, business, media, science and education. The eight women were selected to represent the 1 in 8 women who will be diagnosed with cancer in the U.S. in her lifetime.

On June 11, 2018, the James B. Duke Memorial Library at Johnson C. Smith University was awarded a $100,000 grant to be used for a project called “Making Space for Tech @ An HBCU.” The grant will fund the development of an academic Makerspace that will give all users the opportunity to gain proficiency in design and manufacturing technologies, which are becoming more prevalent in the workforce.
